On the road again…

I must apologize for my blog-slacking-ness lately.  Over Memorial Day weekend, Scott and I loaded up the kids and traveled to Wisconsin.  We drove the car so that Tuck and Fred could join us (Spirit and Tally stayed at the Humane Society).  The drive is a little over 18 hours, so not only was the trip long, but our recovery also took some time.  This “getting old thing” seems to keep throwing surprises my way… we used to be able to do that trip straight through with little effect.  This time, it took us almost a week of sleeping to get back to normal!

It was a great adventure and since we had not been home in nearly two years, it was also overdue.  There are about a million things that I plan to share with you about our trip… I just need to find some time to do that.  Let’s start with some of our trip photos.  There wasn’t much to do along the way, so my camera was my friend.  Luckily there was a lot of cuteness inside the car because outside on the Freeway was pretty dull.  I even had a chance to try out my new video camera function.

Video:  Talking To Tuck

Note on the video:  I should mention that we stopped and stayed with a friend in Evansville, Indiana along the way.  Hence the reference to “Uncle Chris”… of whom Tuck is very fond.  Whether that fondness is mutual is TBD.

So Much To See!

Where is that giant meatball?

Still in the backseat, for now.

I know Grandma's Cookies are Waiting For Me!

We realized on the way there that it was the first time in Fred’s life (almost three years) that we had just our two kids…. we have always had foster dogs.  Needless to say, Fred and Tuck loved all of the special attention (and of course, Grandma’s great cooking).

By the way… this is a case of “do as I say, not as I do”.  Dogs should NOT be allowed loose in a car… they are safest in a kennel or doggie seatbelt.  I just couldn’t make the poor babies ride that way for 18 hours.  And, to be totally honest, Fred stole the front seat most of the way.  I ended up getting booted to the back when he insisted on sitting next to his Papa.

More on our little getaway to come!

  1. Hey~I am new to this puppy thing. You mentioned puppy seat belts and kennels. I have a 3-month old boxer/ridgeback mix. What do you recommend? We have a Subaru Outback…and you can purchase gates for the trunk. Would that work?

I saw the photos – he is precious! A friend of mine has a Ridgeback too – she is a wonderful dog. I am definitely not an expert on what to use (I am very bad at it). The safest thing is probably a plastic kennel. They come with slats that a seatbelt goes through to hold them in place. However, once he is full grown, that kennel will have to be VERY large and may be a problem. They make lots of different seatbelts. I think those are the easiest to use. But, you have to start him young and get him used to wearing it. Gates are not a bad idea. Although, in my mind, that is more about the driver’s safety then the dog’s. Sorry I am not more help, definitely do a little research online… I am sure you will find something. Sorry I am not more helpful. If I find out anything more though, I will do a post on it!
