A Day At AARF

Scott and I spent last Saturday afternoon volunteering at the AARF Adoption Fair.  Of course, I found this a perfect opportunity to use my new camera and introduce you to some of the animals currently looking for a home.

Drum roll please….

Charlie White

Charlie White (because there is also a Charlie Brown) was confiscated by Animal Control from an abuse situation.  As a puppy, his former owner placed a collar around his neck and put him on a chain in the backyard.  (Have I mentioned how cruel chains are?)  As Charlie grew, the collar did not.  Over time, his collar became embedded in the soft skin of his neck and no one noticed.  By the time Animal Control was notified, the collar was so deep within his flesh that it had to be surgically removed.

Charlie spent several weeks recovering from his injuries at a Vet’s office.  Miraculously, a small indentation in his fur is all that remains of his scars.  His esophagus suffered some trauma and he has to be fed in a special way (spreading it out over a large area to slow down his eating).  Otherwise, he has made a full recovery.

An energetic husky mix, Charlie is really fun to watch run.  He enjoys playing with other dogs and absolutely LOVES water.  In fact, he and the volunteers at AARF have a special arrangement… he gets two buckets.  The bucket at the back of his cage is strictly for drinking.  The one at the front of his kennel is a “foot bucket”.  As soon as the “foot bucket” hits the ground, he splashes and kicks the water all over the place.  Somehow, he manages to abide by this rule.  For more information, check out his PetFinder page here:  http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/19527778

Molly (Number 2)

Molly Number 2 (because there is a Molly Number 1), was abadoned at the AARF in a plastic kennel.  Not only is it illegal to leave an animal in such a manner, but the temperatures inside of that kennel would have gotten dangerously high if a volunteer had not found her when she did.  It was fortunate that someone happened to come by at that time.
An anonomous phone call notified AARF that her name was Molly and that she had been a “backyard dog”.  Her owners were no longer able to feed her and she needed a new home.  Molly was shy and timid around people when she first arrived.  A few short weeks, however, and she is quickly learning how nice they can be.  More information here:  http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/19527581

Luka

“Shaken, Not Stirred” – for some reason, this photo makes me think of a this quote.  A very handsome boy, this 25-pound-ish dog is great with other dogs, but needs a cat-free home.  He is extremely sweet.  He was the result of an owner surrender after they decided he just wasn’t good enough.  More info here:  http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/18559879

Dory

It only took a few seconds for me to fall in love with this little girl.  Dory is a terrier-mix puppy, weighing in around 30 pounds.  She loves people, other dogs and modeling for the camera (clearly).   She is nearly full grown and a lover of all things people.  She was found all alone, on a busy street… searching for someone to love her.  Her breed is undetermined, but she has amazing brindle markings on her legs.  More information here:  http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/19121960

Chico

This little man is Chico.  AARF took him Animal Control when he time started to run thin there.  We are uncertain of his exact mix.  Our best guess is Hairless Chinese Crested and Beagle.  I wish I had gotten a shot of his whole body – there was a lot going on at the time.  He is mostly hairless on his back, with just a few sprouts here and there.  He is definitely differently and certainly not a dog your neighbor has!  Chico has a ton of love to give and really enjoys all of the attention he gets for being unique.  For more information:  http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/18676981

Frannie

Of course, I couldn’t forget the kitties.  This is Frannie.  She loves to be the center of attention and certainly the boss of the situation.  Obviously, this means she would do best in a home without children.  She is a beauty.  For more information:  http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/15965128

Handsome Man

Unfortunatley, I don’t know the name of this fine young lad.  But, he sure stole my heart and loved having his photo taken.  This weekend, I will see if I can find out his name!

Those are just a few of the babies looking for homes at AARF.  If you are ever in the area on a Saturday afternoon, you should definitely stop in.  You never know where you are going to meet your one true love!
