The Wrinkles You Love to Have

The Shar Pei puppies have now been here for a full week. I can officially say that I love them and they are driving me crazy (I imagine this is what parenting is like – sorry Mom!).

It turns out that AARF has had several Chloe’s this year. So, we had to come up with new names… my apologies to their former Mama. The girls are now called Romi and Michelle (I was in a crunch). Romi is the black one and Michelle is the blue. However… I can’t seem to get a grasp of Romi… The poor girl has been called everything from Roamy to Roomy to Ramy to Raumi. The last one sounds a lot like Raw-Meat to me and that is just not cool! I think we may have to come up with something new. Any suggestions?

They saw their first Vet last week. While I know it is rude to discuss a girls weight… these guys are HUGE! Romi is 25 pounds and Michelle is 31 (remember, they are only 15 weeks old). Sadly, they both need Eutopian surgery, as almost all Shar Peis do. We will have to find an adoptive family that is willing to pay the $800 for this procedure.

They are doing extremely well at housebreaking and play with each other all day/night long. The only problem is that they HAVE to play in the same room as me, which means there is 55 to 105 pounds of dog (depending upon how many other dogs join them) wrestling at my feet everywhere I go.

We are working on not jumping up on people and going in our kennels when asked. Right now, it is like herding cats… and Romi sounds like a Howler Monkey once is in. Fortunately, she does calm down after about five minutes.

They are very high-maintenance. Also, as soon as the other dogs hear the door to the basement open, they all dash down the stairs to go outside. The girls, however, stand at the top of the stairs and wait for a personal escort. They REFUSE to go down the stairs by themselves. So, I walk up the stairs to open everyone’s kennels, then I escort them down the stairs to go out, then I come back up the stairs to wait for them while they do their business, back downstairs to let them them in and back upstairs to go about my life… who says I need a gym membership???

Okay – to be completely honest, I am a little flattered by the fact that they want to be with me all of the time.

Michelle keeps her eyes closed in the sunlight because she needs Eutopian Surgery (this is because her eyelids fold under and the lashes scratch her eye, if not corrected, it can lead to blindness).

Check out these wrinkles! If only I enjoyed the ones on my forehead as much as I enjoy these.

They look great! Thank you so much for taking them in. Don’t worry, their former mother is not bothered by the name changes! :p

P.S. Sorry they are a handful! I can’t believe they wait for a personal escort down the stairs, lol. And as for their size, Snickers (the one I kept) is now 41 pounds and Wrinkles (who my mother kept) is 37. So they are all little fatties! I didn’t realize they would need the surgery, I’m sorry about that. I really hope they can find someone who cares enough to give them everything they need. Thank you again! 🙂

Jennifer – I tease about how difficult they are. But, really… I ADORE both of them (and so does EVERYONE else in the rescue program – in fact, I had multiple volunteers to pet-sit them a few weekends ago)!!! They keep all of us laughing. I put them up on the Shar Pei Forum – a GREAT resource and there were a ton of compliments of how beautiful they are.

Nearly every Shar Pei needs that surgery, so it was expected from the beginning. Nothing we didn’t expect, just means that their home has to be that much better!

One application from this weekend looks really great… fingers crossed!

Thank you for trusting us with them,
      Amber

That’s wonderful! I really hope they both end up with great forever homes. It’s nice to see someone else is so concerned about fur friends. If I had the space and the money, I would be doing exactly what you are doing. At the moment I don’t, so all I can do is occasionally donate to ASPCA and Humane Society when I can afford to. I’m glad there are people like you out there, doing so much for animals.

By the way, I thought I would let you know about the size of the parents, so you and others know what to expect. Zoey, the mother, is 46 pounds, so the puppies have almost caught up with her already! That is because Porthos, the father, is 81 pounds at last weighing. He is not fat at all, just a huge dog lol. He was 52 pounds at 5 months, so at least they are growing a little slower than him. :p I had told Scott how big he was, but I don’t know if he ever mentioned it to you. If you look at my Facebook profile pictures, you will see a picture of Porthos and get an idea of his largeness lol.
