Duke, I am your master!

The giant head on top of this blog – that is Duke.  I am not really his master – he doesn’t have one yet.  He is currently in foster care for AARF with my friend, Suzie.  She shot that picture and let me steal it for the blog (thanks Suzie).

Duke is a pure-bred Bullmastiff.  He is one-year-old and 100 pounds.  He is expected to continue growing for the next two years.  Right now, his head is bigger than mine, a lot bigger.  Duke and his sister, Layla, who is also in AARF, were taken in by Animal Control when their backyard breeder died (life’s little paybacks).  AARF was asked to help them find homes… and now they are in foster care.

Both of them struggled with stomach issues when they were first brought into the program.  Nothing is a small problem with a 100-pound dog, but stomach issues are even worse!  After restrictive diets and some medication, both dogs recovered completely.  Now, they are waiting for their forever home to find them.

Saturday, Duke’s foster mom was out of town and we kept him for the day.  Duke and Fred had a great time playing in the yard.  Duke runs like a Clydesdale, turning his feet in as he runs.  It was amazing to watch.  Fred somehow managed to fling himself all the way on top of Duke and humped him – showing off his dominance.  We didn’t have the heart to remind Fred that he is only half of his size, but Duke was a great sport about it.  When he got tired of Fred bumping his  back, he would sit down and Fred would just slide right off.

Later, we all watched a movie.  Duke laid under the kitchen table and snoozed for awhile… but either the picture or the sound stole his attention and he would run up to the TV, cock his head to the side and stare at the screen.  I am not sure what he saw there, but it fascinated him.

Duke was terrified of 10-pound Tuck.  He tried to come in the room with the two of us.  Tuck didn’t like him invading her space and gave him a good yapping!  He tucked his tail between his legs and dashed out of the room in a brown streak.

Duke gives Suzie a hard time… constantly looking for trouble.  He is a huge goofball and I just can’t wait for him to find an awesome family.

Yep… (hard time might be an understatement) that was Duke, not the cute little puppy in the picture.

Poor boy just needs a family to spoil him!
