Letter to LC

All Tongue

Dear LC,

This morning we took you to the Vet’s office for the last time.  As we drove, you licked the tears from my face and tried to heal my sorrow.  This made me laugh and cry harder at the same time.  When we arrived, you happily went with the Vet and appeared excited to meet new people.  My heart broke when you glanced back at me as she led you away, a look of confusion on your face when we didn’t follow.  I apologize for not being strong enough to stay by your side as you fell asleep.  But, the Vet assured me it would be peaceful for you and best for us not to watch you leave.

I will cling to the memory of your smile as you chased the ball in our yard for the last time this morning.  I will remember your warmth and I will picture you in a better place.  A place with vast fields of lush grass, a ball ready to be fetched at all times.  A place where bowls of ice cream, cheese and hotdogs are always available.  Unlike here, you never get tired, you never have to go in a kennel and you are never alone.  Instead of irritating you, other dogs bring you joy and you happily wrestle with them in the thick clover.  When you decide it is time for a rest, there is a plush bed for you to cuddle in, under the shade of a huge willow tree.  Most importantly, you are always surrounded by a love as great as you give.

When we first met, you were fearful of me.  I lured you in with treats and kindness, convinced you to trust me.  I apologize that I let you down.  You deserved so much more from this world and my heart is heavy with grief that I could not give it to you.

Someday, I hope you will forgive me and I will forgive myself for how unfair this world can be.
