Seriously, this is a true story
Based on recent experiences, I have started carrying a “doggie” kit in my car (while praying I NEVER have to use it). Who does this???
Lately, I seem to find myelf wishing I had things that I just don’t have (and I am not talking about the million dollars that I constantly know I am missing – if only I could remember where I put that!). Plus, with all of the dogs around, it doesn’t hurt to have a few of these items handy at all times!
A little peek into my kit:
1. Yellow Rain Boots – Because you KNOW that the dog is going to find the ONE rain puddle there is and drag me through it.
2. Dry Dog Food – Just in case I can’t catch the dog, I like to have a little something to leave behind. One, I like to think it helps the dog associate my scent with good stuff. Two, at least the dog’s belly will be full for a little while.
3. Wet Dog Food – Sometimes you need a to give him/her a little incentive!
4. Wet Cat Food – ’cause that stuff is really stinky! And, what dog can resist something that stinky… here doggie, doggie!
5. Water – I always keep a couple of bottles on hand, for the same reason as the food. If the dog is hungry, she/he is probably thirsty too.
6. Disposable Bowl – Obviously, I need something to put the food in.
7. Binoculars – In the case of a very elusive dog, these are a handy little tool to have. It is always re-invigorating to see a dog that you are after.
8. Towel – With my luck, he/she is probably going to be muddy.
9. Blanket – Sometimes it is easier to scoop a dog up with a blanket. Other times, a dog is in rough shape and simply needs the warmth.
10. Slip Leash – An essential element in this kit is a leash that slips on, no collar necessary.
11. Smelly Treats – A variety of different treats. Especially smelly ones are kept in two ziplock bags to seal in the aroma!
12. Scarf, Winter Gloves – Remember this is North Carolina, but sometimes you need a little something for cover. Since I don’t have a winter hat… I figure the scarf works in a pinch.
13. Flashlight (not pictured) – ‘Cause ya know it’s gonna be dark!
All of this goes into a tightly sealed box in my Jeep so that it doesn’t end up like this:
Wish List – ah, the items that elude me:
Walkie-Talkies – These would be great to have. That way, when there is a team of people working to catch a dog, it would be much easier to communicate and corner, as needed.
Dog Trap – I don’t actually want to keep one of these in my car. But, I do often borrow traps when a dog is being especially difficult.
Kennel – While it would be great to have one of these in the car for easy transport of a new dog, I simply can’t afford to give one up. Plus, I am not sure I could deal with the constant clanging that a kennel makes. I think I will deal without this.
A Forever Home – Well, if I could keep one of these around for when it is needed, I wouldn’t have to foster… which would be ideal, but the reason it is on my wish list.
Very good tips! I have been seeking for some thing such as this for quite a while now. Regards!
