Dreams Really Do Come True

Wow – that may be the cheesiest title I have ever written.  I am from Wisconsin – we LOVE cheese – so deal with it!  🙂

Scott and I purchased our home in July 2006.  We refused to consider any property with less than an acre because our dream was to have a huge fenced in yard where we could eventually have animals.  At that time, we had no idea just how much a fence would eventually mean to us… because we had never even considered the idea of fostering dogs.  However, the reality of ever getting that fence seemed like a distant dream after our professional estimate was over $7,500.

Then, after years of talking about we wanted, Scott decided to try to build it himself.  About $1,000 and several weekends of work later, this is what he created:

Mesh fencing goes all the way around our property (excluding the driveway), running through the woods where it can barely be seen.  Split-rail fencing goes along the driveway and has mesh behind it to prevent any escapees.  The small fenced area under our carports is separated from the larger area of the fence to hold dogs that need to be kept apart (although, so far all of those dogs have figured out how to go over or under the gate between the two areas).

Releasing the dogs to run in such an enormous area for the first time was so much fun.  All of them stared at me for a moment, confused, then took off running across the yard, chasing, wrestling and playing with each other.   They no longer hesitate to be confused but dash out the door ready to take in the fresh air.  For the first time, they can run as fast as they want without ever having to slow down.  L.C. loves playing fetch in the yard, Fred loves running circles around the huge Magnolia tree and Tuck enjoys sunbathing on the patio.  At the same time, I love watching all of them have so much fun while they wear themselves out.

Life’s good in the fence.
