Broken Spirit?

Spirit spent the first day and a half with me crouched in the corner, trying to disappear into it. She growled a little when I moved too quickly around her. But she never showed any aggression. Every bone in her body was visible, even through her thick fur. She was filthy, covered in dog lice (not transferable to humans, by the way), full of internal parasites and refused to move, going to the bathroom right where she laid.

But, it has been almost three days and she is making strides that I think are huge. She has not growled since the first day she came and she no longer flinches when I pet her. She is eating three times a day and will take food out of my hand. Before she refused to eat in front of me. She is using puppy pads to go to the bathroom – requiring her to move from her “safe spot” in the corner for those brief moments. Last night, Spirit had her first bath and combing (many more of those to come). She is taking her meds well. She then cuddled on the couch with me for a several hours. Every time she readjusts her position, I consider it a good sign because she isn’t too afraid to move.

I have not “enrolled” Spirit in either of the rescue organizations yet, for fear that she will not be “adoptable”. But, I am holding out hope.

Unfortunately, the sadness and the fear in her eyes remains unchanged.
