She is tougher than she looks!

This is one of my favorite photos of Tuck.

Several summers ago, my Dad and I took Fred and Tuck up to my uncle’s cabin for the weekend.  Located in beautiful Minocqua, Wisconsin, the cabin sits on a piece of land that sticks into the water.  The rustic log cabin is full of sentimental memories from my childhood.  The land is shaped so that there is a big open lake out front and a small inlet of water to the back, surrounded by forest, where nature and wilderness collects.  The water in the back is calm and fresh water seaweed, moss and algae covers most of the water along both sides of the dock.

The sun was setting when Tuck, Fred and I went for a stroll along the shore.  It was chilly, only in the 50s, and everything was quiet and calm.

Suddenly the silence was broken by the loud “quack” of a duck, sitting on the open water.  He teased and enticed the dogs to a chase, knowing he was just outside of their reach.  Both dogs started running up and down the dock, along the land and back again, trying to find any way to reach the floating duck.  The green seaweed covering was solid enough that the dog’s must have mistaken it for grass because both dogs took off at that moment, attempting to walk across the top of it.  “SPLASH!” water flew everywhere as they crashed into the lake!

I knew the water wasn’t very deep and Fred could make it out on his own.  But I panicked, wondering how tiny Tuck would make it back out.  I was about to reach down and pull her up and out of the water when her little headed bobbed up, her eyes huge with shock.  Then, she started to swim!  Her little legs kicked and carried her the entire three feet back to shore.  She crawled up onto land all by herself, greeted by her mama who was laughing hysterically at the algae covered canine.  I was so proud.  Clearly, she wasn’t as entertained.

It was baths for everyone that night!
